We are introduced to the first Rasing patient in this volume. This is Dr George Simms, who is described as “a thirty-two-year-old former laborer”. George’s story is thus remarkable because it offers a good case study of how organizational factors can affect health-related quality of life. Rasing, after all, became a major concern for the United States government and was regarded as a serious ethical issue. At this point, it must be mentioned that although the ethical shortcomings of Rasing are now generally understood, its association with chronic pain, and especially the role of mental illness, are issues for debate.
At the time of his accident, George had been receiving treatment for both chronic and acute physical ailments and had been doing well, in spite of this. A year earlier he had been discharged from a hospital after having been in continuous pain following an accident. He had previously been treated for depression and had been prescribed a combination of medications. He had stopped taking his medication owing to this, but had begun to experience symptoms suggestive of a mental disorder including depression, panic attacks, and phobias. Because of his employer’s negligence, George was notifying the company that he was having symptoms that could be related to a mental disorder. The resulting investigation into Rasing failed to identify any obvious unethical shortcomings.
Following his discharge from hospital, George began to experience minor setbacks and did not think that these would go away. He therefore began to work full time as a counselor in an acute mental health facility, but continued to have problems with trust and an overall inability to trust others. This was affecting his relationships with fellow workers in the facility and his relationships with his loved ones back home. One of his family members, who knew of George’s condition, became increasingly worried about George’s attitude and behavior and reported this to his boss. George was fired from his job after this episode.
Rasing is the subject of many lawsuits that were brought against the makers and distributors of Rasing by their former clients. The lawsuits included cases of negligence due to over-diagnosis, inappropriate use of medication, and outright fraud. One of the most notable lawsuits was brought against Sims Healthcare by one of their sales reps, who was paid $1 million in compensation following a case brought against the company by an elderly patient who had died from lack of treatment. Sims Healthcare had distributed an anti-depressant to patients in an attempt to treat her acute mental illnesses without regard to whether the drug was appropriate for that condition or even proper for that patient. Following the death of the patient, Sims Healthcare was also negligent in its failure to provide the appropriate medical treatment for the patient.
There have been more recent incidents involving chiropractors and massage therapists, who were hired by Rasing Healthcare. In one case, a former employee committed suicide after several weeks of being treated at a Rasing clinic. In another case, the chiropractor responsible for the care of the patient who later committed suicide had a contract with Rasing which allowed him to prescribe controlled substances such as alcohol and synthetic narcotics to other Rasing clients while he was supposed to be treating patients. This contract was not signed by the client and should have been, since it was signed under duress. This contract caused all of the problems that came to light with regards to Sims Healthcare.
In reviewing this corporation, I have some concerns about how they are marketing their franchise. The Rasing organization seems to target black and Hispanic individuals with their ads. Also, the Sims Healthcare website makes fun of those who do not believe in evolution. Finally, there seems to be some distrust of chiropractors and chiropractic medicine. Whether or not these are legitimate concerns or merely a way to promote their franchise is hard to say.
After considering all these factors, I have to conclude that Sims Healthcare is a good company that promotes good health through responsible medicine. At the same time, they have been accused of exploiting the weaknesses of people in order to make a profit. The concern over the use of force in handling patients and the death of one client is valid. Whether or not these concerns will affect my decision to purchase a franchise is unknown. If I live in Georgia, however, I will probably choose to research eugenics based on the reputation of the company and the quality of their customer service.
